Even though Maison was now an adult, his mother would always think of him as her young son. It was hard for her to have him living so far away. Maison might become “affected by the world,” and Mrs. Vallance feared he might become lost.
She forced Maison to swear to her that he would always remember his foundations and be a “nice boy” in order to combat this. Maison carried the image of his mother’s face and words with him as he moved to his new house.
