Arthur Ashe, the first and only black man to win the Wimbledon Cup. With all of the social reform and history-making events in the 70s, this achievement falls right into place with those occasions. Long and lithe and seeming to float across the tennis court, Arthur attracted a lot of attention in tennis arenas, not only because of his talent but because of his race. Tennis was a predominantly white sport so his success was not only an achievement for him but for many other people of color wanting to expand their ambitions into arenas dominated by white people.
