David Rice Atchison was born in what is currently known as Lexington, Kentucky, in 1807. He was an up-and-coming lawyer who migrated his practice to Missouri in order to establish his own firm. He also had a plantation and a significant number of enslaved African Americans.
This might not seem unusual initially, but the suspense increases dramatically when we find out who one of his most well-known clientele was.
