Joseph Smith
It was Joseph Smith, the man who founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It also is known as the Mormon Church.
Because Mormons settled on their territory, Jackson Country, Michigan, tried to expel them. When Atchison stepped in to defend them, a sea of faithful supporters gathered to support him and helped him secure a seat in the House of Representatives in 1834.
