During WWII, the powerful Boeing B-17E bomber, dubbed the “Swamp Ghost,” no doubt caused much destruction. However, in 1942, it was brought down by enemy fire during a raid on Japanese forces in Rabaul, New Britain.

The crash site in the jungles of Papua New Guinea was granted decades of rest, and when it was finally discovered in 1972, it was in outstanding condition, carefully covered by the kunai grass and mire. Remarkably, when they explored the cockpit, thermoses of coffee were still intact. The value of such a pristine piece of history is estimated to be around $9 million.
