He did not look back
The main conclusion was that Steven did not seem to turn around once when he was walking in the forest. From his body language, Jessica could tell that her husband was feeling totally at ease between these trees. She had even heard him whistling loudly on one occasion. She did not even know that Steven could whistle! This made Jessica very confident that she could quite easily follow him without being discovered.
