It turns out that the dog licking his hand was the now 1-year-old baby of the passed away Lucy. Lucy was pregnant when she ran away and delivered the baby in the 3 months she was alone in the forest. The baby dog had grown up in the forest on its own. And now, the baby dog had found its way to Tom, just like Lucy had.
